ABSTRACT The Cross River Estuary plays host to both marine and freshwater biodiversity, as it hosts the diversity of fishes which sustain the lives of the inhabitants fishermen and women of the area all year round.
As a result of the As a result of the changing climate, the vital services provided by the Estuary are facing an uncertain future which will affect the fishermen and those depending on it for protein source. This study therefore assessed the impact of climate change on artisanal fisheries in the Cross River Estuary. Fifty years — data on annual climatic parameters rainfall, temperature, relative humidity and wind speed used for the study were obtained from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency NIMET , Oshodi.
Also, climate change impact data were obtained from the fishermen that have been involved in fishing activities in the estuary for at least 20 years and above through the use of a structured questionnaire, oral interview and focused group discussions. Both the descriptive and inferential statistics were applied on the data. The findings revealed significant change of annual climatic parameters rainfall, temperature, relative humidity and wind speed trend of the area between the periods — This resulted to increased weather uncertainties such as early rains that are not expected, shift in the start or end of rains and dry season, flooding of the fishing communities, increased heat, increased cases of thunder and windstorms, high tidal activities and low visibility along fishing routes.
There were also increased malaria and leukemia cases among fishermen, and the fishermen spend longer time in the sea during fishing operations due to poor fish catch while some abandoned fishing activities. The fish ecology also suffered from climate change impact through reduction in species composition of fin fishes and an alteration in time of peak abundance of fishes in the area.
The statistical results reflect that the impacts are not alarming and are controllable. Therefore, Cross River Estuary Commission CREC should be set up by the Federal Government to facilitate adaptation to climate change challenges programs for the fishermen in the area and regulate fishing activities.
This is because of the strategic nature of the Cross River Estuary in terms of fish species diversity and protein provision not just for the study communities but fish supplies for the nutritional need of the inhabitants of the Gulf of Guinea, as well as, income generation for Federal, States Akwa Ibom and Cross River and Local Governments Areas bordering the estuary.
